Becoming a ranger.

Postby Haffron » Sat Mar 12, 2005 4:31 pm

Takes Relkin what a week to become a ranger? From what I can tell,. I just do not believe it is fair for Champions, Since it takes hundreds of ore versus doing some quests, running around coinwhoring gathering messages you need, possibly some goss... I dunno I hate to annouce anything but I find this kinda lame. I dunno, Clan Lord is starting to look like everquest with these annoying quests :P not the romantic questing that'd I would desire for. Hopefully Blood Bladers have a more interesting quest to become a Blood Mage then what I have seen from these.

What would a more romantic quest be?

So doing a bunch of monotonous gossing and several "slay" the animal quests is your idea of a romantic quest? I think thats sad. Not to mention the collecting of the ore.

I mean hell something involving GI, or tracking some mystical beast, or ANYTHING else this just seems like some last minute comp out to get the stuff out in the open. I dunno, the whole thing seems lame. I figured the ranger quest would start at GI if anywhere, since you have all the ranged gizmos there.

No thanks.

That's hardly the case.

Lame? No. I don't consider it lame at all. I think they did an outstanding job -- whether or not you agree with their concept of what a Ranger is is inconsequential.

Agree with Polerand, and just want to point out that Rangers in fiction and myth may use ranged weapons as an option, but are not necessarily associated with ranged weapons.

Aragorn, probably the best known ranger in pop mythological literature, is associated with the sword Anduril.

First off, Haffron, I'd like to say that I wouldn't call this a "romantic" quest -- I was just asking what you thought would be a romantic quest.

That being said, I've found the current ranger quest very enjoyable. It doesn't fit perfectly with my vision of what a ranger is, but I think it is good nonetheless. Rangers are not Champions. The road to becoming a Champion may be more arduous, time-consuming, or coin-consuming than that of a Ranger, but that's because they are not the same. I'm sure the path to becoming the bloodmage-subclass will not be quite like the Ranger or Champion quests, either.

As far as romantic quests are concerned, you could probably design a neat quest along these lines and submit it to a GM.

Disclaimer: HAY GUYZ THIS POST CONTAINS MINOR SPOILERS THAT ANYONE WITH A 3rd CIRCLE FIGHTER WHO HAS BEEN OUTSIDE OF TOWN SINCE THE UPDATE AND BROWSES TMN AT LEAST BI-WEEKLY ALREADY KNOWS ABOUT, BUT I DON'T WANT TO GET IN TROUBLE.

If "running around gathering messages" is trivial, so is "gathering a bunch of ore." Do you have any idea how fucking many messages it takes to become a Ranger? Here's a hint: A FUCKTON. And you can't just sit in town on a heap of money and buy them, either (I'm reasonably sure that it's possible if not feasible to take a library character from newbie to Champion without them ever leaving Puddleby city limits), you actually have to go out and kill shit.

My fighter has gotten over 50 "knowledge grows from working with" messages from Island Panthers alone, 169 in total, 195 "blade flashes" messages, and 93 "learn from travelling" messages over the past week, during which time he has earned over 10,000c from hunting, and is still getting more of these messages, which I presume means he hasn't gathered "enough" to do anything useful like become a Ranger yet, and that doesn't even start on the logistics of humping every tree in every forest to find the Ranger Hall (admittedly, this won't be a problem after the first few months, but I suspect all the types who will find the Hall in the near future will be pretty tightlipped about it) and doing whatever additional quests are required (since as reported by Azriel's journal, Elenis was able to get into the hall but couldn't become a Ranger).

Of course, that may also be because he has only 50 Gossamer ranks which is less than X, where X is the number required to be a Ranger, and where anything lower than X will lead you on a wild goose chase, which is annoying (at least the Champion trainer has the common courtesy to tell you "sorry, not enough Fell yet"), but a separate matter.

Also, a romantic quest would be silly, because it would also have to be a repeatable quest. The "mystic beast" can only be tracked down so often before it gets sick of it and replaces Shadowmutt in town, the princess can only be saved once, and you can only get so much blood out of a stone.

I think what Haffron was trying to say was it seems to take forever to become a Champion, while becoming a Ranger can apparently be done rather quickly. Yes, yes, if you managed to buy a thousand or so ore you could become a Champion quickly, but it would cost an insane amount of coins.

That said, the only problem I have with it is that we may end up with a lot more Rangers than Champions - even if some of those Rangers would be happier as Champions. Ideally becoming a Ranger or Champion should be equally as difficult in my opinion.

Watson and Tinker said in the fairground the other day that they thought becoming a Champion was indeed too difficult, so I suspect that it will become easier in the near future. The big reason becoming a Champion has been so difficult is that they didn't want people who would be happier as a Ranger becoming a Champion because it was the only thing available for a while.

My guess is that they're less worried about that now, especially since the BloodMage types probably aren't going to be swayed as much by the other classes.

I do believe they said one of the reason becoming a Champion was so difficult was because it was first and they didn't want people who were more suited to being Rangers to just become Champions because they could. So, now that that's not a problem ...

Well, I WAS enjoying the ranger quest up until someone decided to publically post on the Sentinel the connection to the collect the critter challenges and now instead of a sneaky, quiet quest for the earth sun hybrids it's "Hi, take a number and get in line, you have ten people ahead of you for this particular challenge."

Thanks Haffron. Thanks alot.

I feel your pain Sareth, but personally I don't think Haffron said anything that wasn't already painfully obvious just from playing the game and/or reading Thoomcare. I've been trying to figure out the Goss messages since the update and honestly feel no closer now than then. I am notoriously stupid and expect to be the last, ever, to become a Ranger, but I'm having a ball trying to figure out what the hell to do when my Goss flashes like a shooting star every ten secondes of I get one of the critter messages (I too have had literally hundreds of those and wandered around endelessly and feel no closer to understanding than before, but at least can pay for the expensive library now).

I guess what I'm saying is that the Ranger quest, to stupid little me, is very difficult, but also loads of fun. Really fun!! I must admit that I tried to figure out "re Verminebane" first name from that photo on Thoomcare so I could "cheat" and locate him with my mysfit, but I couldn't figure it out. I also can't get to Faleen Sfoft despite locating him to within a reasonable area. I want a parachute dammit!!! :) And I especially can't get that scattered brained scout to look at me the same way twice which makes me sure I'm doing something totally wrong. Ranger quest is very frustrating, but that makes the challenge that much more fun to me.

You're pretty stupid Jazz, but I won the Stupid Cup a long time ago, and you'll have to work very hard to wrest it from my dumb Zo hands.

Come now folks, lets just get along?

As for what Jazz said, I agree 150%. My fighter friend has been having a _blast_ traveling all over puddleby, earning more money than he's had in ages, and uncovering happy little ranger secrets.

And don't worry, the cat's not completely out of the bag yet, it's still great seeing rumors that are incorrect :)

And as for having to wait in line, well, that's to be expected. You can't blame everyone else for wanting to be a ranger as badly as you!

Noting that it's the ooc forum, folks need to relax and enjoy the quest. I had very little to no outside help to get where I'm at now, and it's much more enjoyable that way. It's a fun quest if you don't let yourself get too worked up over it.
