Make FWitB Opt-In

Post by Torin » Mon Nov 15, 2010 9:54 am

Some people love Flame Wars in the Badlands and think it serves an important function. Others, including me, see it as toxic and harmful to the game.

I suggest that, as a compromise, make FWitB an opt-in forum that is hidden to those who haven't signed up. This will allow those who want to use board functions such as "View new topics" to do so without seeing flame topics, unless they want to see them and sign up for FWitB.

I also suggest that the auto-pruning for the Off Topic forum be turned off. Auto-pruning may or may not be suited for FWitB; I will let people who want to use that forum after it is opt-in say what they want. A few people have put their topics in FWitB instead of Off Topic because of Off Topic's auto-pruning. That should not be a factor. People who want to post non-flame off-topic subjects should be able to do it in Off Topic without the disincentive of auto-pruning.

I'd like to see FWitB moved to a specialty forum one way or another so it's less visible, but I'm good with it being opt-in too.

I used to feel differently , but now the thought of posting Off Topic posts in Off Topic seems really boring. I can understand the request to have topics remain in Off Topic, but Vagile placed that limitation because of bandwidth issues. (There is also a limitation on Forum Games forum.)

So I would prefer that topics in FWITB not be deleted automatically because it is more fun and adventurous to post there. And for that reason I would also want that forum to be visible to everyone so people are more likely to read posts I might make there.

I am in favor of making fwitb opt-in, and having off topic be the place for non-flamey non-CL discussion by removing auto-prune. I am also in favor of auto-prune for fwitb or just... shooting the whole thing into space.

FWitB should now only be accessible to registered users.

OK, but that wasn't what I requested. I am a registered user, so I can see FWitB. I want FWitB to be like the subclass forums--only visible to those signed up for it.

I support pruning Flamewars and removing pruning from Off-Topic. Flamewars are not the kinds of things we want to stick around, while some off-topic threads may be well worth keeping.

Making flamewars a speciality board is a good idea I think, as long as no one has to go out of their way to approve peoples' applications to join it.

The change does make it harder to see FWITB. I usually read forums without logging in, and other people probably do the same.

If you post a thread in the non-prunned FWitBD, wouldn't it would eat up the same bandwidth as if you posted it in a non-prunned off topic?

I never lurk.

I don't know what the big deal is. People need to be protected from what? Themselves? Get a life. You're either an adult or I'm not your daddy.

Yes Vagile chose these forums as 'casualties' so that the other forums can remain unaffected.
