About your decision towards moderation

Post by Gloria » Sat Sep 18, 2010 5:31 pm

Hi Vagile,

I want to appeal to you to reconsider your decision to allow a non-Vagile, non-GM Sentinel user to moderate Suggestion Box and /or OOC forums. I have interacted in forums where there were many strict rules for posting there. Moderators did not hesitate to close a topic I started or split off part of a topic I was posting in if they felt it was off-topic or broke a rule. I find moderation in these forums intrusive. More and more, I have come to appreciate the easygoing nature of the Sentinel.

I think allowing a non-Vagile, non-GM user to moderate these forums will lead to splitting off threads, closing, deleting, or moving entire threads, and deleting comments. I feel this would change the atmosphere of the Sentinel. The discussion would be much more focused, on-topic, and readable, but I see all those as negatives. Instead of a leisurely place to chat about certain topics related or not related to CL, the Sentinel would become more streamlined and efficient.

As it stands now, you or the GMs can intervene if you are alerted of a user practising extreme and malicious violence. Otherwise you usually let people and conversations flow on their own. GMs can glance briefly at suggestion polls to look for highly popular suggestions or be pointed to certain suggestions from time-to-time.

Regards,
Gloria

As I understand it, Vagile is awaiting the results of the soon-to-be-posted poll before she makes a decision on the matter.

Arguably the atmosphere of The Sentinel could do with a change. More players stay away than post or read regularly. I agree no moderation would be preferable but we can try with Lorikeet for a while and see how it flies.

Well, I'm going to keep an eye on it, and if you (plural) have problems with a post, let me know, but my inclination is to let things go unless they get really bad. (So don't let them get really bad.)

Thank y'all for your responses! ;) I also voted for Lorikeet in the moderator poll because I felt she would be a good moderator in the Sentinel.

Well I have to say I was wrong about a moderator for Suggestion Box. I think Lorikeet is doing a great job! She hardly ever interferes with a discussion unless there is an urgent need. So the moderation doesn't feel intrusive, but it works when it needs to.

I wonder if thread necromancy is cause for moderation.

No I don't want more moderation. I was just saying that Lorikeet really was a good choice for Suggestion Box. Out of Character is still controlled by GMs only.

I think more moderation would be good. Sentinel has a bad reputation chiefly due to that, I feel.
Extreme level disparity is community disparity.

There is a fine balance, and I think it errs on the side of letting people speak. Sure it threads devolve: lock em up. But that doesn't happen as much as it used to. I have found that overly trigger happy mods tend to stifle discussion.
