List of legal command modifier keys

Post by Arod II » Sat May 24, 2014 3:36 am

Just spent 30 minutes proving I can't find my you know what with both you know whats.

I know I've seen a list of legal command-<a key> options somewhere. For example, Command-W is legal, but Command-Q is not (for obvious reasons). Can't find it now.

Can someone point me to the list?

(Yes, by experimenting for 30 minutes I probably could have just experimented with macros until I found all that worked . . . )

that lists things like f1, tab, etc--but not what letters are legal when combined with command key

yes, I actually looked for this list here already :)

oh well, guess I experiment

I just KNOW I've seen someone post a list of the "legal letters" and of course it annoys tremendously when I can't find it again. . .

You will probably not find one for 2 big reasons:
(1) OS X allows people to define their own command-key shortcuts under
System Preferences>Keyboard>Shortcuts
You can look there for what is already mapped for system wide use, and what the defaults are if you haven't edited them.

(2) depending on what helper app you have loaded (kernal extensions, TSR style GUI enhancments, DAs, etc.) they will also have their own convenience cmd-key triggers.

If you want to know all of the ones on your particular system, you can Download and try out the demo of KeyCue ( http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/14861/keycue ) or equivalent app. (I own KeyCue but do not use it very much thanks to the delay it added upon launch.)

Whatever is on that list you (you can see them all in Keyboard>Shortcuts) can either work around or disable them if you never use them or want to map them to better things. Instead of telling you what will work, I can tell you what probably won't based on defaults. BTW: I forgo cmd-{letter} shortcuts for this reason, and I turned on "full keyboard access" (in System Preferences>Keyboard) to enable F1-F12 to act as actual function keys on my laptop, and I just hold the Function key "Fn" to access brightness, backlight, next track, pause, etc. So much faster and less error prone for a game like CL where you need to be able to quickly activate an ability (such as chaining).

Launchpad & Dock:
cmd-option-d = toggle dock hiding

Input Sources:
cmd-space= select previous input source
cmd-option-space= select next in input menu

Screenshots:
cmd-shift-3 = save full screen-shot as file
cmd-option-shift-3 = copy screenshot to clipboard
cmd-shift-4 = save picture of selected area to file
cmd-option-shift-4= copy selected are to clipboard

Services (note depending on you helper apps that are always running such as evernote, fantastical, etc.) you might have less or more than these:
cmd-control-shift-5: capture selection from screen
cmd-* = get applescript result

cmd-shift-d = lookup in dictionary
cmd-shift-f = spotlight
cmd-shift-y = make new sticky note
cmd-shift-m = Open man page in terminal
cmd-shift-a = search man page index in terminal

In CL here are the in-app command shortcuts:
cmd-, = prefs
cmd-h = hide CL (global for all apps BTW)
cmd-option-h = hide others (global)

cmd-j = join game
cmd-shift-j = select character

cmd-z = undo
cmd-x = cut (global)
com-c = copy (global)
cmd-v = paste (global)

cmd-a = select all (global)
cmd-n = find text
cmd-r find text again
Fn Fn = dictate (What? didn't see this til now.)

cmd-d = game windows
cmd-f = text window
cmd-g = inventory window
cmd-l = players window

cmd-i = info
cmd-p = push
cmd-[ = pull

cmd-k = karma
cmd-t = thank

cmd-s = spirit link (share)
cmd-u = unlink (unshare)
cmd-e = equip
cmd-m = minimize
cmd-`= cycle through windows

Anything not listed (or that you haven't disabled is fair game for a macro trigger. I don't bother with this and just use full Fkey access since I can easily toggle it, and hardly anyone uses my machine.
“Hey why doesn't you screen dim when I hit F1?”
“Cuz I am leet! hold down the Fn key then try it! ;)

BTW: The macros section mentions this but in case you don't have time, the option key modifies the output of a key. Example:
pressing option-s outputs “ß”
so if you wanted to trigger a macro upon hitting option-s you would have to type it like this:

Code: Select all

option-ß
{
//macro goodness…
}
not

Code: Select all

option-s
{
//this macro will fail
}
because of the low level-change, CL reads both the option key & the symbol output, oddly enough. This kinda doesn’t make sense, but I assume the fix is probably more trouble than it is worth. It is a minor inconvenience, and once you know it is easy to work around anyway.
