Declaration of intent to seek Bard status. [Angadol]

Post by Alces » Mon Jun 29, 2009 12:11 pm

NOTE: This is posted in Angadol's name because I like Alces' bluebie belt too much to cover it up with anything
...even Gold.

[OOC]
Alright, I did it. I bought a cheapass refurb eMac off of eBay specifically so that I can start messing around with TuneHelper. That's how much I want to be a bard. Give me a couple of weeks to compose, and I'll be ready for a questor audition.

If I bring enough songs with me, and if they're decent enough, may I do both the questor and bard auditions in one shot?
Reason being- I'm typically on very late at night, so I already know that scheduling is going to be an issue; and I want to be as little of an inconvenience as possible.

I've already secured an Ocarina for myself, and will now begin to fervently seek out a chorded instrument.

Regards,

- Angadol

Ok I just deleted what I wrote because I saw you had 'procured' an ocarina.

Maybe I'm biased because I'm an oldbie, but it seems a bit unfair that questers can potentially buy up instruments and not quest the way us old people used to do.

I for one wouldn't appreciate seeing a person audition as a quester and a bard in the same sitting. So hope that I won't make it to be a judge, I suppose.

Out of curiosity, what merits is the exile judged on? Anything beyond music?

I actually did a fair bit of composing back in the day (all of it now lost...[sigh]), and would have happily gone for Bard back then if instruments weren't so impossible to obtain.

I found a lump of clay, Meph checked it for me- it was good, so I bought a Mac.

Apologies if you take offense to this method, but I didn't want to make the investment until I had an instrument in hand.

I have very flexible scheduling hours.

Also, you have to write new songs for the Bard audition - you can't just play your quester songs (but you probably knew that?).

I'd prefer that the auditions be separate, but perhaps only a week or so apart.

What are good times for you?

The guild seeks hopefuls who know the general concepts that guide melody and rhythm. If a hopeful desires to play an instrument capable of chords, then a demonstration of proper chord use is also expected. Hopefuls are encouraged to seek out Bard Masters or Bards to discuss music and composition before auditioning for the guild.

Those who audition are not examined for their musical ability alone. The guild is particular about the type of exile that will be admitted to its membership. An exile who demonstrates modest talent, respect for his or her fellow exile, and respect for the guild is a highly prized bard hopeful.

Right- I was thinking I could write like 8 songs (2 for questor, 6 for bard) and audition them all at once for the guild's convenience; but it's totally cool if you're flexible and don't mind the hassle. :D

Typically sometime between 10pm and 2am PST, depending on when the boys go to sleep / wake up for their first feeding.

Here are the requirements for those auditioning for questership:

Compose a minimum of four songs of distinct style and flavor (a limit of six to be played unless stated otherwise by those conducting the audition).

Your compositions should be for one (1) instrument. You may not play a song on a wind instrument, then switch to a string instrument for the second song during Quester auditions.

Coriakin wrote:The first audition is to gain the rank of Bard Quester, an intermediate stage between bard hopeful (with no formal guild standing) and full bard. For this audition you must present four songs, in which you demonstrate a basic grasp of music's basic concepts: melody, harmony, and rhythm. Your songs must all be for one instrument, but it can be any instrument.

Once you have an instrument, you will need to write songs for it. Full bard auditions require a minimum of four songs, and a maximum of six. These songs must all be new... you aren't allowed to recycle songs from your quester audition. You can write for (and use) any instruments you have, if you're fortunate enough to have more than one by the time you're ready for your audition.
My bad, I remembered it wrong.

10 songs at once then. That's what I meant.

Keep in mind, as a quester you cannot play any instruments that you did not have made for you. Gathering instruments is not a terrible idea, but for the purposes of the quest you'll need to acquire instrument parts and for your full bard audition you'll have to write songs for an instrument you acquire the hard way.

Oh interesting...

So the moral of the story is- I should have waited until receiving questor status and taken the part to Hendrux myself.

Interesting...so it may be a little while between the auditions then.

The history of the bit besides music talent being applicable is rooted in the idea that the ability to play a bard instrument comes with a very large snert potential. If you appreciate the fact that there haven't really ever been any people running around playing @60((((((((((((/b#9)9)9)9)9)9)9)9)9)9)9)9)9 constantly, then you owe something to that little sidenote. (Sure, you can always turn sound off, but you get the idea.)

If I recall, Zaroff may well be the only person to have ever been turned down for that particular criterion.

Of course, some might suggest that the duck song is a similar flagrant abuse of music-playing ability, but I'll leave that for the critics to discuss. ;)
