Um... since when? Disk images have been around since Disk Copy was added in System 7.5, as I recall.
While true, those were of type .img, I believe, which I don't believe is equivalent to the more modern .dmg format.

There are ways of dealing with .dmg files on OS9, but I don't think it's an out-of-the-box solution, much in the same way you say that .sit isn't.

No, too simple. Too easy. I say tarballs with a proprietary compression.

FYI, sometimes the Mac will refuse to un-ZIP an archive. There are a few workarounds (like going into the dreaded terminal window and modifying permissions by hand), but by far the best method is getting the Unarchiver http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver.html. It's small and works flawlessly. You might wanna download it and have it handy for those just-in-case situations.
