Replace the CL download SIT file with a ZIP or DMG

Won't do jack on a brand-new Mac. You need to know enough to download the Unarchiver or (God help you) Stuffit Expander. It'd definitely make things easier on new users if they could, you know, download and play the game.
“However,” said Dumbledore, speaking very slowly and clearly so that none of them could miss a word, “you will find that I will only truly have left this school when none here are loyal to me.”

What's wrong with Stuffit Expander?

In the OS 9 days, everyone had (and all but needed) Stuffit Expander. Now that Apple brought ZIP into the Finder, Stuffit's domination has declined.

Most downloads now skip Stuffit and use ZIP/DMG. It may be time for CL to make that shift also.

I'm curious.... What kind of Mac is the CL server? What OS? Both really old, I'm guessing.

Who you callin' old, Torin... Why, I bet you've got SOCKS older than the CL server!

It was updated a few years back -- I believe it's a CRT-era iMac... ;) I'm pretty sure it's OS-X, though. Probably even 10.x, where X > 0!

Yeah, Skirwin's right (what are the odds?!?!) about .sit, though. It may be time to join the 1970s and at least use a tar file... <G>

We'll mention it to the appropriate people.

Yes, but is the CL server is running SOCKS older than the CL server?

Much appreciated.

Agreed.

Suggest ZIP files across the board for consistent ease across platforms.

And since you were wondering, linux unzips files fine.

That's a load off my mind. I was really worried about people who wanted to decompress the Mac client on Linux.

Hmm, I just thought Stuffit Expander was just one of those programs that you had to download when you get a new Mac, analogous to having to go download Acrobat Reader when you get a new windows machine (or a .zip program on a win2k reinstall).

Aside: After a year, installing programs on the Mac still seems weird and goofy to me in comparison to the windows application install process.

OOC

I don't know if this is exactly related, but I have tried viewing visionstones from the collection of them, and most are having the .sit format. I don't seem to be able to use these. My (Windows) computer only wants to use those that have .clMov or something like that. Is it possible to view the .sit movies on a Windows computer?

You need to download stuffit expander for windows and unstuff them first. .sit is a compressed file (like .zip is). Once you unstuff them you can watch them.

The mac client still works on OS9. .dmg would be a bad choice in this regard as you can't open them! .zip would be the ideal middleground.

Um... since when? Disk images have been around since Disk Copy was added in System 7.5, as I recall.

While true, those were of type .img, I believe, which I don't believe is equivalent to the more modern .dmg format.

There are ways of dealing with .dmg files on OS9, but I don't think it's an out-of-the-box solution, much in the same way you say that .sit isn't.

Always happy to be mistaken, though.
