Fabled Monsters from Distant Lands.

Post by Daimoth » Fri Jul 10, 2009 4:31 pm

During my research and study of nearly every book in our laughable excuse of a library, I have come across certain tomes that garner my interest in a way all the rest do not. Ones pertaining to monsters, demons or unusual animals of different lands -- and perhaps even different planes of existence.

In my pursuit of perfection in every single activity I apply myself to, I have decided to recreate the written descriptions of these beasts in a visual format. While capable with simple ink outlines, I am relatively unfamiliar with the hues and colors that would do these drawings justice.

With advice from the versatile Hoggle and well-renowned Kisa, I will attempt to remedy this shortcoming in this catalog. I urge any of the rest of you who are artistically inclined to do the same.

The first is a Minotaur, or Minos. My linework, Hoggle's colorization and texturing.

The Minotaur is a monster, or demon, which guards areas or items of particular importance. It is uncertain whether they obey the wishes of a master or if they are merely set loose and assault whatever is before them.

What is certain is that they are creatures of incredible strength and are formidable opponents, able to impale the bodies of humans with their horns and crush skulls with their hooves. What makes them even more dangerous is their interest in crude weaponry. Often seen carrying giant axes or maces, or sometimes the trunks of small trees.

Goblins. My outlining and coloring.

Image

Goblins are a lesser race of sentient humanoids that are notorious for petty criminal behavior. They will steal, kidnap and even kill if it means they'll get a copper coin. Because of their infatuation with money, their incompetent martial ability, and because of their impossibly low standards, they are among the cheapest mercenaries available on the mainland.

Goblins are commonly believed to be the mutated spawn of other races. There are very large physical differences between individual Goblins, even of the same family. Their bone structure, mass and skin pigmentation can all vary drastically. Despite this, nearly all are short in stature, adults averaging around 4 feet tall. "Hobgoblin" is the term commonly used to refer to the rare larger spawns.

Goblins are cowards, and find strength in large groups. If encountered alone they will almost always flee.

Mushmen

Image

Found mostly in cool damp caves, Mushmen are somewhat of an oddity. Entirely lacking internal organs, these creatures are almost impossible to kill with physical attacks. Early Puddleby explorers have reported battles with a single Mushman taking place over several days due to their ability to regenerate entire limbs.

Slow and lumbering Mushmen walk with the aid of a staff. This staff seems to serve several other functions such as tending to their mushroom patches and as a crude weapon.

Wondrous medicinal effects attributed to potions made from the corpses of Mushmen have resulted in these strange creatures becoming a rare sight. It is not known if these creatures were hunted to extinction, or if the mushmen have just become more covert and reclusive as a natural defense.

Some mystics have speculated there is some link between Tree giants and Mushmen and a mythical life embuing spring, but no proof has ever officially been presented.
