Ethereal Plane Classes and Field Trips

Post by Feodoric Mermeios » Wed May 22, 2013 11:36 pm

The Hel Tree Order and the University of Puddleby are sponsoring a series of classes (taught by me) on everything you could possibly want to know about the ethereal plane. Topics include: what the ethereal plane is, its layout, how to get there and find your way around, places of interest, why the plane is important to Puddleby (and the world) and the role it has played in our history, what the 'brion brothers have to do with it, what mysteries still need solving and more.

The classes are aimed at anyone who is not familiar with the EP or wants to expand their knowledge about it. Classes will meet every week at the university for an hour or so, and then proceed to the ethereal plane for a field trip relevant to the topic of that class.

The first class will be about the basics - what the EP is and how to get around in it. The field trip will be to the Fourth Sphere via Portal Island.

Time: 9pm Wednesday Eastern Time, every week (first class on May 29th)
Place: The University of Puddleby Courtyard
Total duration: about two hours, depending on attendance and ethereal weather.

-----------

Tentative syllabus for the six classes:

1. The shape of the ethereal plane and how to travel in it.
Field Trip: Portal Island and the Fourth Sphere.

2. Basic ethereal studies: denizens of the plane, the ways of getting there, Ethereal Amulets and ethereal mystic skills.
Field trip: The Ethereal Forge.

3. Points of interest in the plane and zodiac mazes
Field trip: A zodiac maze.

4. History of Puddleby and the ethereal plane Part One (the 'brion brothers and the Purgatory crisis)
Field Trip: The Ethereal Tower

5. History of Puddleby and the ethereal plane Part Two (the ether wars)
Field Trip: Visiting and using one of the ether wars kyuems to enter the plane.

6. The current state of ethereal exploration
Field Trip: Relevant sites on Venables' Island

Visionstones of the classes will be posted on this page: http://h3o.ca/h3o_epclasses.html

The first class and field trip was a success! Thank you to everyone who attended, asked questions and helped kill the two Greater Deaths (!)

I hope to see you all at the next class. We'll be going to the Ethereal Forge.

If the class goes to forge please contact me if you have space for some EPS materials to be created for me.
I surely pay for it either with coins or by providing the materials for an EPS to be kept (if enough storage space ;))

The next field trip will indeed be to the Forge. Amulets will not be provided beforehand, since we actually have to get to the Forge to make them. For that reason, depending on the number of people with Amulets of their own we may be travelling via Dal'Noth instead of Portal Island.

A note for people with ethereal items to make:

The main purpose of the field trip to the forge is educational and to get Ethereal Amulets for class members. We will probably craft a few other things, but the Hel Tree Order does not guarantee that our crafting mystic, Drablak, will craft things to order. In particular, Portal Pass Keys will only be available at his discretion and at a price.

I have an announcement to make on behalf of the Hel Tree Order Council. Of note: This decision is final, we agonized over this enough already.

When we began these classes, we knew the Forge trip would be our most popular expedition simply because of the lack of ease it takes to get the items that are available when an Ethereal trained Mystic gets to the Ethereal Forge. It didn't sink in how big a deal this trip would be until we began getting "orders" from various people requesting different items.

The Hel Tree Order began discussing - admittedly the discussion was dominated by the Council members - the ramifications of this and have decided to not create any other items besides Ethereal Amulets.

We each have our own personal reasons, and I have decided to take this time to share my own view with you so that it's not simply an arbitrary "no" vote that seems to come out of nowhere.

The Ether Wars were a big deal, and the Ethereal Plane has not stopped evolving. As we witnessed last field trip, the Greater Deaths in the EP are a challenge for the top fighters in our community. This is evidence enough - for me - that the EP is a volatile and dangerous place. Not to mention evolving.

For those who don't know about the Ether Wars, it will be covered in the 5th class in detail.

For a brief summary, exiles brought about a near collision of planes between the physical plane and the ethereal plane by using Ethereal Portal Stones and the like without discretion.

Since the announcement of these classes, it has been mentioned - with some degree of pride - that various people were responsible for the Ether Wars becoming a reality. I'm not personally prepared to handle trying to determine who will be responsible and who will not. Exiles have a long history of not taking warnings about the destruction of our world seriously.

This is why I voted no.

Im not the kind of person to refuse to help just because I dont receive payment or new toys... but a player(or players) locking out other players from achieving status, items, areas, secrets, or anything at all... is nostalgic of things distasteful in Puddleby's history already.

NO SOUP FOR YOU

Seriously? This is not in the spirit of community I have come to know in Clan Lord. I respect that it's an educational endeavor, but it was also an opportunity to provide needed help to the community. I mean, I'm an 8th circle fighter with more money than I can ever spend, yet I have no way to obtain an eps to help out my clan. No one sells them.

I will help out a group for no personal gain, but not if there is a gain and I'm told "No, you can't have it." (I would pay very well for an eps too, btw.) I'm sorry for uncharacteristic pissiness, but that really rubs me the wrong way. If I had the power to provide a rare and sought after service I would use it, not withhold it. We have a small population, this is no place to be elitist, we should help each other.

PS ~ the CL economy is wicked broken.
NNK!
